I didn’t know chickens ate pens… We learn things everyday π

They were just admiring them. They would eat them if they could, I think. π

I love your chickens!!! And your garden is beautiful too!

Thank you. It looks a bit bare at the moment. We had a very hot spell last year that killed all the grass, and then the chickens ate all the new growth so my project for this year is to restore the lawn π

I look forward to seeing it

Thanks, Esther. They are good girls, they can be cheeky at times though, they seems to like any new plants that I put in the garden, but they provide my breakfast at the weekends. π

Thank you. It can look a bit wild, but I like wildflowers. I like a garden to be like a little bit of nature, not too ordered and neat. You can’t have a neat garden with Chickens anyway, they are forever scratching around. π

How do the chickens get on in the cold?

They are much tougher that I thought they’d be. They have a sturdy insulated house to sleep in and their feathers keep them warm. When it was really icy I rubbed a bit of Vaseline into their red combs just in case.

Thank you. Yes, their antics are hilarious, much better than watching television. π

We have some in the neighborhood as well as geese & ducks (I live across the street from a river). They just kill me. They are so fun to watch.

I often wonder what goes through their minds when they are in one part of the garden and then all of a sudden start running down to the other end. I love watching them interact wth each other too. π

They are good animals. and they lay eggs, which is a lovely bonus. They do make a bit of a mess of the garden though, but I wouldn’t want to be without them. π

Are they friendly? Like take?

Yes, they are friendly, they always come running up to me, but mainly that’s because I usually give them treats. They don’t really liked being picked up much though.

What a lovely garden you have! And those hens are just adorable; I liked that you rubbed Vaseline on their combs, so nice!

Thank you π The vaseline works a bit like lipbalm stopping their combs from becoming chapped in cold, icy conditions. They are very tolerant of the cold. On hot days they lay on the ground panting, and I put out lots of water with ice in it for them. π

Awww, I wish I could have hens, but my city by-laws banned pet chickens and ducks a few years ago.

That is a shame. I am allowed a small flock, but not a Rooster, only hens. One day. π

We had them when I was farming, my son still has some in the city, they are amazing creatures. I love your chicken pen/coup π

Thank you. It’s called an Eglu but they are really expensive, but easy to keep clean and resistant to mites. I picked it up second hand but it was still Β£200. (I thought that was a lot!). π

Ah yes, that pen, but I was being cryptic – the pens you put on the ground in their packets π but yes, very nice chicken pen.

Oh! Yes. Those were a gift from A Guy Called Bloke for wiining one of his blogging challenges. I threw a few mealworms down for the hens so it’s look like they were staring at the pens! π
