Last week I took part in Jim Adam’s Song Lyric Sunday Challenge, the theme was songs that feature wind instruments which include Brass instruments (horns, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas) and Woodwind instruments (recorders, flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, and bassoons) suggested by Maggie From Cave Walls.

The Song Lyric Sunday Challenge this week the theme is songs that feature the lyrics of either Past, Present, or Future. It’s all about Time.

Coincidentally enough, yesterday I reposted a song lyric/poem that I had written myself about this very subject, I must have had a premonition. Now, I don’t mean to obtrude, but here is the link:
It’s called “Before it’s time to say goodbye”. Now if anyone would like to write some music and post a recording of them singing it, then please let me know.
Time is one of those major concepts that spark off philosophical debates. It’s because Time for us is not in perpetuity but is finite. IF we had all the time in the world, would anything ever get done? Would inventions have been invented if time had not been limited? If people had not sought to make their mark upon this world that time will not easily Erase?
Well, on to the matter at hand. When I read the challenge I thought of this song that I felt met the criteria. This is a melancholic song written by Ervin Drake in 1961 and first recorded by Bob Shane and the Kingston Trio, but later recorded in 1965 by Frank Sinatra. It is Frankie boy’s version that is widely known and I have linked to it below:
When I was seventeen
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for small
Town girls and soft summer nights
We’d hide from the lights
On the village green
When I was seventeen
When I was twenty-one
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for city girls
Who lived up the stair
With all that perfumed hair
And it came undone
When I was twenty-one
When I was thirty-five
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for blue
Blooded girls of independent means
We’d ride in limousines
Their chauffeurs would drive
When I was thirty-five
But now the days are short
I’m in the autumn of the year
And now I think of my life as vintage
Wine from fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
It poured sweet and clear
It was a very good year

There is something fragrant about reminiscing about the past. Perfume and fragrance trigger some powerful memories.
I hope you enjoyed this post.
