The 2022 Great Bloggers Bake Off – Let them bake cake – A poem for Bake Off.

My Blogging Pal Mel, of the blog Caramel, is organising the 2022 Bloggers Bake Off, click on the links below to take part. To celebrate this event, I have been kindly asked to write a poem below that includes some of the themes of this year’s bake-off.

So, it’s that wonderful time of year,

When we set out our bake-off stall,

Things are tough, but this brings us good cheer,

When we share, it shows we care, after all.

Making things from scratch costs less money,

and it brings joy to all those we meet

So why not bake a sponge and sprinkle it with honey?

Spread a little love with tasty things to eat.

Don’t worry if your cake sinks down in the middle,

drizzle it in chocolate and it’ll taste just as nice

Or you could cheat and buy one from Aldi or from Lidl,

It’s the taking part that counts, it’s fun and cheap at half the price.

Baking is Love – Cheesy Mashed Potato Scones, Heart shaped, of course.

In the Spirit of the Bake Off, I have made some Mashed Potato Scones, and I made them Heart shaped. Well why not?

I didn’t follow a recipe as such, I just improvised. I had some mashed potato left over and wanted to make something with it.

To make mashed potato, I never add milk which I find makes it too runny. I add a tablespoon of butter and a good handful of grated cheddar cheese.

I had a cup and half of this mix left over to which I added some extra salt, some pepper and an egg.

I then gradually added self raising flour until the mixture became a sticky dough. I kneaded it on a floured board then rolled it into a ball and left it for an hour.

Then I flatted it, cut it into quarters and shaped each piece into a heart shape just less then an inch thick.

I then placed them on a baking tray, brushed them with milk and baked them in a medium to hot oven for 15 minutes.

Here is the result.

So not the traditional scones that we spread with jam, but a savoury one that tasted delicious spread with butter.

It’s that time of year again

When thoughts turn to something tasty

And despite the summer rain,

We’ll be merry but not so hasty.

We’ve been through a year so tough

But keep smiling for goodness sake,

Sometimes it felt we’d had enough

But where there’s love, there’s often cake.

For that’s how we show we care

We get together, drink tea and bake.

And in addition to the food we share

It’s more love that we will make.
