50 Word Thursday – The Importance of Rules.

He had been warned not to touch the Maori Guardian Statue but he had an irreverent attitude to rules. Stepping close to admire the finesse of the carving, he was impressed. So much native ritual carving was rather crude if not vulgar. This was different, it seemed to call to him. Ignoring the rules, paying no respect for Maori ritual and culture and not believing in the power of the old Tohunga, the Maori magic priests, he touched the statue.

We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows.

He became the shadow as the dark, extraneous spirit trapped inside the guardian statue found a new host to occupy. As Temahakauiri stepped out into an unfamiliar world, the tourist’s screams could not be heard trapped inside the ancient statue. Rules were important.

Cutting Words

The Anaesthetic hadn’t worked. She was aware of lying naked while a doctor made an irreverent, downright vulgar remark about her breasts. Being bashful, this was mortifying.

Then, without any finesse, the surgeon sliced her open and she heard him say. “That’s not right at all!”
