This poem was written for Helene Vaillant’s ‘What do you see’ picture challenge:
Like a fallen leaf
lying on the forest floor,
my pride in tatters,
wondering what my future has in store.
Naked in the wilderness,
gnawed by grubs of doubt,
now you left me lying here,
what is this life about?
So charming, you enticed me
but the years revealed the truth,
your hateful lies, my tortured cries,
have robbed me of my youth.
My blind desires may have been
a factor in my fall.
but knowing me for all these years,
how could you be so cruel?
I know I’ll rise above this,
emerge a butterfly from my grief,
but now, I lay discarded here,
like a fallen leaf.
