SMILE – Even though you don’t feel like it sometimes.

Right now, I’m feeling a bit fed up and I have a sore and swollen eye, but at times like this, I remember this song by Nat King Cole. So I thought I’d sing it too and share it with you, in the hope it makes you Smile. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, and happy Mother‘s Day too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Euphemistically Challenged

Many people find my Mother to be overly blunt. She speaks her mind, but she doesn’t mind when other people do the same. That’s just the way she is.

I may describe myself as Vertically Challenged, Getting a bit plump around the midriff and getting a bit thin on top.

She would say I was Short, Fat and Balding.

She calls a spade, a spade. Which is an achievement seeing how little interest she has in gardening.

A Euphemism is a way of describing a harsh truth in a softer, more easily absorbed way. Like sugar coating some bad medicine. Governments often use this to disguise and unpopular measure or policy. Removing substandard housing to improve an economically deprived area, is actually just Slum clearance. Using Enhanced Interrogation Methods to obtain information is more starkly and accurately called torture.

It is also the way that nice, polite people try to soften the blow of a harsh truth. In olden times, to tell a lady that her petticoat was showing you could use the phrase ‘Charlies Dead‘. Which apparently was a reference to the Execution of King Charles the First. If a mans flies are undone you could say, “your flags at half mast”. If you wanted to be polite, that is.

My Mother isn’t a horrible person. She is loving and supportive, she just lacks diplomacy.

She is, in short, euphemistically challenged.

I love her anyway.
