I instantly thought of an old sea shanty that I was taught in school. It does have a rather saucy lyric, but I don’t think I understood it when I was young. It is a tale of someone who has a rather foot looseand fancy freerelationship with a maid of Amsterdam. Of course, by today’s standards, the song isn’t too rude, it’s rather gentle really.
Lyrics:
In Amsterdam, there lived a maid,
Mark well what I do say.
In Amsterdam, there lived a maid
and she was mistress of her trade.
I’ll go no more a roving with you, fair maid.
A Roving, A Roving, since rovings been my ‘ru-i-in’
I’ll go no more a roving with you, fair maid.
I put my arm around her waist,
mark well what I do say.
I put my arm around her waist
she said “Young man, you’re in great haste”
I’ll go no more a roving with you fair maid.
A Roving, A Roving, since rovings been my ‘ru-i-in’
I’ll go no more a roving with you, fair maid.
The Picture is of a Canal in Delft that I took on a recent trip. I do have some photos of Amsterdam somewhere but I didn’t have time to search for them.
